It’s probably one of the rare lists in life that you don’t mind growing- the list of Cardinals’ players on the National League All Star Game squad. Michael Wacha, Trevor Rosenthal, and Yadier Molina will join Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta in Cincinnati along with the other outta-this-world players from around the league.
Trevor Rosenthal and Michael Wacha have earned their first All Star selections this season. Trevor, the Cardinal closer, is 24/25 in save opportunities so far. Take that and put it with a 0.70 ERA over 38.1 innings and you’ve got one scary closer. (Well, for the team that has to face him.) His 100 MPH heater and nasty breaking pitches have been in the formula for his forty-two strikeouts. Michael Wacha has been great this season as well. His 1.09 WHIP and .228 opponent batting average are the best on the pitching-rich Cardinals. He has also struck out eighty batters over 101.1 innings pitched.
Yadier Molina, National League All Star. It just has that ring to it. Yadi will be paired with Dodgers’ Yasmani Grandal as the reserve NL Catchers. It’s Molina’s seventh straight All Star nomination. Though his offense is noticeably-down, .292 batting average with twenty-seven RBI and two homers, his defense is still the best. He has caught thirteen of thirty-one potential-base thieves, a 41% CS-rate.
Five All Stars and the best record in all of baseball. It’s pretty fun to be a fan of the Cardinals. We have a chance to put another deserving Cardinal in the All Star Game. Carlos Martinez, the 9-3 righty, is one of five men competing for the final open spot on the 34-player roster! “Tsunami” leads the St. Louis pitching staff in strikeouts with 105 in an even 100 innings. It’s pretty remarkable what he has been able to do, considering his young age. At twenty-three, full of emotion, Carlos couldn’t be where he is without the guidance of Yadier Molina, as you can see in the picture above. Voting for the “Final Vote” ends at 3:00 CT in the afternoon on Friday. You can vote for Carlos by using the hashtag “#VoteTsunami” on Twitter, by texting “N4” to 89269, or by voting here.
