The Cardinals and Giants are meeting in the Gateway City this weekend to play a three-game series, their first since last August.
Adam Wainwright will get the nod in the first game of the series. Wainwright faced the Nationals in each last outing and allowed four earned runs in his seven-inning outing. Wainwright will match up with the Giants’ Johnny Cueto. Cueto took on the Rockies at Coors Field his last time out and held Colorado to one earned run on six hits through six innings.
In the middle game of the series, the Cardinals will go with Michael Wacha. Wacha faced the Nationals in his last start and surrendered three earned runs in six innings of work. Jeff Samardzija will pitch for the Giants. Samardzija took on the Braves in his last outing and allowed four runs through his five innings.
The series finale on Sunday night will feature Carlos Martinez for the Cardinals. Martinez tossed a gem of an outing against the Brewers in his most recent start, submitting eight shutout innings with eight strikeouts. San Francisco will counter with Jake Peavy, and his last start was not shabby by any means. In Atlanta, Peavy held the Braves to one base hit through seven brilliant innings.
SF: Buster Posey, catcher. Posey has seven hits in his last 27 at-bats, including three home runs and eight RBIs.
STL: Matt Carpenter, third baseman. Carpenter is 9-29 over his last seven games and has scored seven runs.
