This week, the Cardinals and Pirates will play four games at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. This is the teams’ fourth meeting of the year.

Starting for the Cardinals on Monday will be Carlos Martinez. Martinez is coming off six scoreless innings over the Royals in his last start, one where he recorded the majority of his outs on the ground, therefore striking out three. Hurling for the Pirates will be Jonathan Niese. Niese was smacked for nine hits in his previous outing in Seattle against the Mariners. Niese allowed four earned runs and walked two.

In the second game of the series, Mike Leake will toe the rubber. Leake threw seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits to the Royals. His counterpart will be rookie Jameson Taillon. Taillon is fresh off six innings of one-run ball over the Mariners with six punchouts.

Jaime Garcia will pitch for the Cardinals in the third game. In his last start, Garcia twirled eight innings against the Brewers, surrendering a solo homer for Milwaukee’s only tally of the ballgame. Opposing him will be Jeff Locke. Locke held the Athletics to three runs in five innings of work when he took the mound most recently.

The finale of the four-game set will be started by Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals. Wainwright turned in seven innings and held the Brewers off the scoreboard while whiffing five. Starting for the Pirates figures to be Chad Kuhl, another rookie. Kuhl hurled six innings in Oakland when he started on July 7, holding the A’s two earned runs in just his second major-league start.

Who’s hot?

PIT: Starling Marte, left fielder. Marte has thirteen hits in his 48 at-bats over his last fifteen games with four RBIs and four stolen bases.

STL: Matt Holliday, left fielder. Holliday has four homers over his last fifteen games with fourteen runs driven in.
